Knowing how to sleep after breast augmentation can make the first stage of recovery more comfortable. In most cases, patients are advised to sleep on their back with their upper body slightly elevated and to avoid stomach sleeping while incisions heal and implants settle. Below, we share a few simple tips to help you rest more comfortably after surgery.
Why Sleep Matters After Breast Augmentation
Sleep plays an important role in healing after surgery. During sleep, your body can focus on recovery processes such as reducing inflammation, repairing tissue, and restoring energy. Getting enough quality rest after breast augmentation can help support a smoother recovery and make the early healing period more manageable.
How Do You Sleep Better After Breast Augmentation?
1. Set Your Mind at Ease
Falling asleep can be harder when you are feeling anxious, uncomfortable, or overtired. It is normal to experience a range of emotions after breast augmentation, which can affect your ability to rest. Knowing what to expect during recovery and staying in touch with your surgical team can help you feel more at ease.
2. Walk & Move Around Throughout the Day
Gentle movement after surgery is important from day 1. Short walks around the house can support circulation, help you feel less stiff, and make it easier to settle into a healthy sleep routine. Just be sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions and avoid returning to exercise until you are cleared.
3. Know Your Best Sleeping Position
After breast augmentation or breast augmentation with lift, you’ll be required to sleep on your back for a time to ensure your incisions heal undisturbed and your implants can safely settle into their positions. But for patients who are accustomed to sleeping on their stomachs or sides, getting used to falling—and staying—asleep on the back can be tough.
One good way to ensure a comfortable transition is to start sleeping on your back before your breast augmentation. Devote a few nights to the position and experiment with what feels most comfortable to you.
Best Sleeping Position After Breast Augmentation: Back Sleeping
The best sleeping position after breast augmentation is usually on your back with your upper body slightly elevated. Many patients find that a recliner, wedge pillow, or a few supportive pillows helps reduce pressure, swelling, and soreness during early recovery. This position can also make it easier to get in and out of bed without putting too much strain on the chest.
Additionally, keeping your upper half elevated can allow enough scar tissue to form and sufficiently heal. If you find that you just can’t get used to this position, sleeping flat on your back is OK too.
When Side Sleeping May Be an Option
Side sleeping may be an option once your surgeon says it is safe. If you return to this position, take extra precautions to avoid placing unnecessary pressure on your breasts. Use supportive pillows to help keep your body comfortable and wear your surgical bra as directed to support healing tissues and implants.

I was advised by my surgeon to sleep to put something on my back, for the first night. After a couple of days, I can sleep flat on my back. I just had to refrain from sleeping on the sides. But I prefer sleeping propped up because it is much more comfortable than sleeping flat and helps me with the swelling too. From what I’ve read in this article the swelling sensation and recovery period in the breasts could last between 3 to 5 weeks, so I guess I would wait for that time that I could have a proper sleep.
